In the age of 'web 2.0' tags seem to be thing to do, so I was thinking about the benefits vs downsides: easy and fast browsing, get exactly what you want in 3 seconds, if you don't know what you want you can define a general variety, but this is very time consuming to create a system that works well.

I thought about it and how much the iTunes system needs a tagging system so you can have more than one genre. Well i bite the bullet and went through my 2430 songs and tagged each on by hand with a general genre in the designated area, and in the comments area I wrote in some tags that were meaningful to me. For example:

Artist/Song: -.Jack Johnson - Banana Pancakes
Genre:------.---Alternative
Comments:-.. Acoustic, chill, beach, laid back

Now, if I want to find music that is like this and I'm in a 'just relax and chill on a warm day' mood, I'll make a smart playlist with a filter on the comments looking for terms: laid back and chill. I'll get this song, and any other song that satisfies the search terms. I searched this and got songs such as Sublime-Santeria, Dispatch-The General, and Bob Marley-Stir it Up.

mp3, aac, or Apple Lossless?

So you're a music lover, but you can't figure out what format you should keep your music in. There are tons of formats, I don't blame you for being confused. Here's a basic order of formats from lowest to highest quality: ogg, wma, mp3 then the next step up is aac, then Lossless, lastly the highest form from cd is uncompressed such as aiff.

WiMax

Crucial props to Intel. The future in wireless communication is WiMax, or 802.16e. It's a wireless format that will be replacing WiFi, or 802.11x(a, b, g, pre n, and n), in the near future. Intel is the company that made WiFi the standard it is today by putting WiFi cards in practically every laptop and making it easier and cheaper to use. Five years ago WiFi cards costed around 200 bucks, but now you can go to Best Buy and pick one up for 20 bucks.

Now Intel is trying to work the same magic with WiMax that they did with WiFi five years ago. WiMax provides a very wide range of access; we're talking around 10 sq. blocks fully covered with a wireless internet connection. This means miles of straight line coverage. This is a huge advance for the wireless community. If your local city were to invest in a few 802.16e routers your entire area could be covered. Look forward to seeing this technology later this year, but widely integrated in the next five years or so.

Special Tiger Tip!

Enable the new Front Row 1.2.1 on any Mac running Tiger 10.4.5!

This means you can now stream audio or video from other machines right through Front Row. Here are the steps!

1. Download the Front Row Update.
2. Download the enabler, then copy the .pkg file of the Front Row Updater to your desktop.
3. Run the enabler for installation.
4. Install Front Row Updater 1.2.1 then restart.
5. Run the enabler for Front Row 1.2.1 now and you're good to go!!!

Oscars

So I admit I did watch the Oscars on Sunday night. Saw some funny things... Like white people giving the traditional cheesy speeches, and Jon Stewart making jokes here and there, but then I saw a bunch of mumbling black gangstas up on stage all talking at once accepting an award. Possibly the first swear they've had to bleep out unintentionally. Though interesting, I think they need to do more to make the younger crowd actually want to watch these things. This year they did get Jon Stewart, this was a start, but they need some more energy, less boringness. All In all, I'm glad Crash got some awards, it had tons of well known actors and it had a strong meaning that should be understood and taught more today in our society.

After all, "It's hard out here for a pimp."

Hey everybody, who caught the Apple event? Nobody? You missed... uhh... nothing special. They released an Intel mini, but overpriced it. They also released a boombox for the iPod called the iPod HiFi, also very overpriced.

But hey, it's a new month and spring break is the week after next for us down in Massachusetts, YAY!!!

Look forward to some new features coming out later this month for JosephACote.com! No hints, sorry.
